Apply to become a TANK Sonic Arts Resident!


Are you a CU student, alumni, faculty or staff interested in experimental sonic arts? Do you have a passion for teaching & community engagement? ÌýApply now for a fully-funded, five-day Sonic Arts Residency at the TANK Center for Sonic Arts in Rangely, CO. The TANK is a renowned sonic site in Northwestern Colorado centered around a 75-foot water tank with profound internal resonance.

Co-developed by the TANK and the ATLAS B2 Center for Media, Arts & Performance, these Sonic Arts Residencies will occur twice a year and are open to all current CU students, alumni, and staff (excluding faculty). Residents will be chosen by a panel ofÌýRangely residents and TANK staff, with input from B2 staff.

When: Apply NOW through February 23 (11:59 pm MT) for the Spring Residency, occurring May 13-18, 2025.Ìý

(Please Note: Applications for the Fall Residency, which will occur from Sept 16-21, will open in March, 2025)

Residency Benefits

  • Three recording sessions in the TANK’s remarkable sonic environment with TANK recording engineers
  • A pre-residency planning meeting with TANK recording engineers
  • Up to $750 honorarium plus additional per-diem for up to two residents. (Project proposals can include more than two artists, and applicants can elect to divide the honorarium and per diem equally among all involved. This will result in larger project groups but lower individual payment amounts.) Ìý
  • Rental car, gas expenses, and shared lodging. (Depending on group size, residents may need to share a hotel room.)

Expectations

  • Conduct recording sessions in the TANK, working with TANK’s recording engineers
  • Engage with the Rangely community through teaching, leading a workshop, doing a performance, etc. (Final engagement plans to be determined in collaboration with Rangely community partners)
  • Share the final recording with the TANK & B2, with permission to have work shared publicly
  • Engage in timely & reliable communications with all partners through planning, execution and follow-up

  • Applicants must be CU students, alumni or staff (faculty excluded per grant requirements)
  • Applicants must submit samples of sonic work; any and all styles encouraged
  • Applicants must have teaching or community engagement experienceÌý

  • Introduce yourself! (100 words or less)
  • Tell us what you’d like to do in the TANK (150 words or less)
  • Tell us what you’d like to offer the Rangely community (150 words or less)
  • If applicable, introduce any collaborators who would be joining you for the residency (100 words or less)
  • Give us the email address for one CU faculty member who can speak to the quality of your research and your teaching or community engagement experience
  • Give us links to work samples related to the proposed project. (Submit as many links as you’d like, with optional time markers. The committee will spend up to five minutes viewing/listening to submitted work samples.)
  • If applicable, provide a technical rider or equipment list and indicate whether any of the materials or equipment would need to be provided by B2 or the Tank

FAQs

Can I apply with collaborators?Ìý
We have funding for up to two collaborators, but if you’d like to divy up total honorarium and per diem among additional artists, that’s permissible! ÌýNote: honoraria cannot be used to pay existing CU faculty.

Are the dates flexible?
Unfortunately, no. Your availability needs to align with either the Spring or the Fall residency dates outlined here.
