    2003: CIMB Founding

    Colorado Initiative for Molecular Biotechnology (CIMB; BioFrontiers forerunner) established by 3 founders from 3 departments: Leslie Leinwand (MCDB), Kristi Anseth (ChBE), and Natalie Ahn (BCHM).

    2009: 1st Director Cech

    Nobel Laureate and former Howard Hughes Medical Institute President Tom Cech (BCHM; HHMI Investigator) returns to CU to serve as our 1st Director.

  3. Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building under construction

    2009

    2009: JSCBB Groundbreaking

    Construction begins on the Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building (JSCBB) on East Campus, made possible with a foundational gift from Marv Caruthers (BCHM).

    2011: CIMB becomes BioFrontiers

    The CU Board of Regents approves the establishment of the BioFrontiers Institute.

    2012: JSCBB opens

    The Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building opens and achieves LEED Platinum certification. It houses the BioFrontiers Institute, Department of Biochemistry, and Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering.

    2012: IQ Bio PhD Program Launches

    The Interdisciplinary Quantitative Biology (IQ Bio) PhD Certificate Program is created and welcomes its 1st cohort of 8 students.

    2017: JSCBB E Wing Opens

    The JSCBB E Wing opens, increasing square footage for research labs, core shared facilities, teaching space, and meetings to 400,000 SF. This addition was supported by a generous gift from the .

    2019: Comp Bio Minor Launches

    BioFrontiers Education Programs staff and faculty from 5 departments establish the undergraduate Computational Bio (CBIO) Minor to teach students from diverse disciplines to combine computational thinking and algorithms to study biological problems and systems.

    2020: 2nd Director Roy Parker

    National Academy of Sciences member and former RNA Society President Roy Parker (BCHM; HHMI Investigator) begins as the 2nd Director of BioFrontiers.

    2020: Pandemic Response

    BioFrontiers becomes the nucleus of the CU pandemic response, with leadership on the Scientific Steering Committee and running the saliva monitoring test, developed by the Parker Lab, out of a dedicated lab space and team in JSCBB.
