No Parental Information
For financial aid purposes, a student is considered a dependent of their parents and parent information is required on the FAFSA unless the student is:
- 24-years-old
- married
- serving on active duty in the US Armed Forces
- a veteran
- a parent with dependents
- an emancipated minor
- homeless
- assigned a legal guardian before the age of 18
Exceptions
If you have an unusual circumstance you may appeal to be considered independently from your parents. Unusual circumstances typically involve a family situation that makes it difficult for you to obtain your parents’ information, such as an abusive family environment, abandonment, or incarceration of a parent.
If your parents simply refuse to provide their information on the FAFSA, this is not a valid exception. In this case, you may request limited financial aid.
Step-by-step instructions:
1. To begin the appeal process, submit the Statement of No Parental InformationÌýthat corresponds with your academic year.Ìý

3. You will receive an email notification of your appeal decision.
Response times vary depending on the complexity of the issues involved and the time of year. We will make every effort to respond as promptly as possible.
