Job Posting Guidance for Academic Appointments

CU Boulder Internal Job Posting Process: Changes for Various Faculty Titles

Effective February 1, 2024, Updated March 1, 2024

Background

The Colorado Department of Labor and Employment recently revised its regulations related to the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. Specifically, they broadened the definitions of what positions require transparency posting to current employees to include all job opportunities. As a result of this change, all academic departments and units will be required to post job opportunities including:

  • Chair positions and other faculty administrative positions
  • Additional faculty job titles that are not otherwise expressly exempted from the posting requirements

Review the CU Boulder Job Posting Requirements resource for a summary of posting requirements by employment category and direct questions about jobs to: recruiting@colorado.edu.

Additional information is available atHiring Information and Resources.

There is no change to the current requirement that all new and vacant jobs for tenured and tenure-track faculty, teaching- and clinical-track faculty, faculty-in-residence, research faculty, university staff, classified staff, temporary staff, and working retirees must be posted for a minimum of 3 business days to the through the Avature (CU Boulder Jobs) system.

There is also no change to the requirement that all new and vacant student assistant jobs exceeding 9 months must be posted through the student employment jobs system or on the hiring unit’s department, college, school, division, or institute website.

When shared governance groups, (e.g., Staff Council, Boulder Faculty Assembly, United Government of Graduate Students, and CU Boulder Student Government) elect members and leadership roles, the governance group must ensure that the opportunity to participate in the election process is announced internally to the related campus population including information on the amount of compensation included, if applicable, and the application process and deadlines. The governance group must ensure documentation of the announcement and election process is retained.

Effective February 1, 2024, all academic departments and units must complete a campus-wide internal posting process before appointing someone to one of the following job titles, most of which are typically associated with faculty secondary/administrative appointments. These positions must be posted if the appointment will exceed 9 months:

  • Chair and Associate Chair
  • Director and Associate Director (e.g., Institutes and Programs)
  • Faculty Director and Associate Faculty Director
  • Associate Dean
  • EndowedChair/Fellow/Professorship regardless of compensation
  • Fellow, Visiting, Adjunct¹, Adjoint or Attendant Rank if the appointment will exceed 9 months

1The Adjunct title will be eliminated with the implementation of Administrative Policy Statement 5060, Faculty Appointments.

To meet this requirement, jobs must be posted on the for a minimum of 3 business days. Similar to current faculty job posting processes, these positions should be submitted using .

Should you wish not to receive applications for these positions through the CU Boulder Jobs system, follow these steps in the Search Committee Portal when submitting these specific roles:

  • In the “Related Constituents” section, select someone as the “Search Chair” to be the point of contact for the appointment process. Because you may not have an official search chair for this hiring process, it can be any point of contact you wish to designate.
  • In the “Application Attachments” section, you must select a required document. Although you can select anything, we recommend selecting “Generic File 1.” Additional application instructions can clarify that no application or application materials are required to be submitted.
  • In the “Special Application Instructions for Applicants” section, you may indicate that application materials are not required to be submitted through the CU Jobs system and instead expressions of interest can be submitted via email at (insert department contact email address). You may include any additional instructions or requirements in this section.
  • Departments should track and respond to all expressions of interest submitted and should forward them to be considered in the selection process as may be defined by the unit’s bylaws.

All lecturer appointments must be posted on CU Boulder Jobs or the hiring unit’s department, college, school, or division website. The hiring unit must send a copy of the posting documentation to the HR Service Center along with their hiring request.

Hires currently in process but not yet appointed should be submitted for posting through as soon as possible to complete the Internal Job Board posting in advance of the hire.

Exceptions to the internal posting requirement include:

  • Positions that are career progressions, such as promotion of a current employee from associate to full professor or distinguished professor
  • Contract renegotiations/reappointments, including instructor-track reappointments
  • Non-employee appointments, including faculty emeritus status, affiliates, persons of interests (POIs), and volunteers
  • Graduate student appointments (RA, GA, TA, GPTI, Pre-Doc Trainee)
  • Lecturer appointments that will not exceed 9 months
  • The other faculty job titles listed above if the appointment will not exceed 9 months. Note that an internal posting is required if the appointment extends beyond 9 months.
  • Additional appointments, honorary titles or additional compensation negotiated during the recruitment process if referenced in the recruitment job posting.
