Drive in style: EV car share by C4C and CASE (coming soon)

Colorado CarShare is now offering EV car share options in the Center for Community (C4C) parking garage and will soon add options to Lot 204 next to the Center for Academic Success and Engagement (CASE). Don’t forget to also check out the EV at Williams Village.

Updates to City of Boulder's snow response

The City of Boulder has expanded their  to include the following streets: 15th St south of Iris to Hawthorn to connect to 13th st, the east Juniper Ave connection to Elmer's Two Mile Path, East Upland/Tamarack to provide connectivity to 26th st, and Old Tale/Gaptor Rd to connect to the South Boulder Creek trail. 

The city's multi-use paths will also continue to be plowed. For more information, check out the

Buff Bus Spring Break updates

During the week leading up to Spring Break, Buff Buses will only be running late night service on Thursday, March 20. Regular service will end on Friday, March 21, and there will be no service from March 22 through March 29. Regular service will resume on Monday, April 1.

The Bike Program is also continuing its lock swap program! If you are a current fee-paying student using a cable lock, stop by the bike stations during open hours and exchange your cable lock for a high quality u-lock!

Thanks to Pi Kappa Alpha for raising over $50,000

Last November, members of CU Boulder’s  rode a stationary bike for 8,423 minutes straight - one minute for every cyclist and pedestrian killed on U.S. roads last year. The event was called “Pike on a Bike” and the Fraternity raised over $50,000 in pledges to benefit  

Thank you Pike, you guys rock. Or should we say roll? If you see a member of Pike on campus, be sure to give them a high five for their efforts and advocacy.

Diagonal Highway - CO 119 Updates

  • Access the  and  for updates on construction. To get alerts, enter your email in the , click “Northeast Colorado,” select “CO 119 Safety & Mobility Improvements,” then submit.
  • From Feb. 28 until March 10, the Jay Road median between northbound and southbound Diagonal Highway will be closed to all modes of transportation.
  • Ongoing closures: The north- and southbound CO 119 bus stops at CO 52, Southbound 55th Street at CO 119 and the Monarch Road median are permanently closed. North 71st Street will remain closed until May 2025. IBM Drive will remain closed until the end of 2025. The  will remain closed until May 2027.

Women's History Month: Transportation leaders

Celebrate Women's History Month with us by learning about two women leaders in the transportation sector:

  • Jane Duong Davaransky:  currently works as an Associate Transportation Planner for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). She created a commuting program for the SLAC Accelerator Laboratory, a Department of Energy national lab, which led to her receiving the 2018 Staff Sustainable Stanford University Award.
  • Veronica Vanterpool:  spearheaded initiatives as a former Acting and Deputy Administrator for the Federal Transit Administration (FTA). She created the first Data Office of the FTA, which focuses on communication, data analysis and governance. Vanterpool also served as a member of the White House Interagency Policy Council on Puerto Rico.

Winter Bike to Work Day

Brave the cold and take a breath of fresh air during our Winter Bike to Work Day on Friday, Feb. 14! Nothing says "I love my bike" like riding on Valentine's Day. Bundle up and stop by stations throughout the region to get coffee, water, breakfast and snacks. Store your bike in RTD Bike-n-Ride shelter

RTD’s Bike-n-Ride shelters protect your bike from the weather. Just make sure to pick up your bike from RTD shelters; abandoned bikes will be tagged and removed 30 days after being tagged.

To improve bike security, lock both the frame and front wheel to the rack with a u-lock. You can also record your bike’s serial number on the . The serial number is located on store receipts or underneath the bike’s bottom bracket, which is the metal part of the frame between the pedals.

Become a pro at fixing flat tires

Community Cycles is offering their popular fix-a-flat class for free to celebrate Winter Bike to Work Day. Gain a new skill on Wednesday, Feb. 12 from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. at the Community Cycles Shop on Spruce St. .

Learn to Ride classes

Add bike skills to your arsenal by booking a Learn to Ride class with the E Center. CU students, faculty and staff can send an email to schedule a private lesson, which offers a balance bike (a bike without pedals) to practice on.

Tips for safe winter riding this season

Before hitting the road, make sure your bike is winter-ready. Clean the chain to prevent rust, and check tire pressure, brakes and headlights. Make sure to dress in layers, starting with an insulating layer and finishing with a waterproof, reflective outer layer. Don't forget to protect your hands and feet by investing in good quality gloves and thermal socks to keep yourself warm.

Diagonal Highway - CO 119 Updates

  • Access the  and  for updates on construction. To get alerts, enter your email in the , click “Northeast Colorado,” select “CO 119 Safety & Mobility Improvements,” then submit.
  • The configuration of Monarch Road will be permanently modified into a right-in/right-out intersection at CO 119. Commuters can access Monarch Road through Niwot Road or Colorado Highway 52.
  • The  on southbound CO 119/Diagonal Highway at Monarch Road (Stop #24826) will be closed through the summer. The bus stop at Monarch Road on northbound CO 119 (Stop #24827) will remain open.

Black History Month: Transportation leaders

Celebrate Black History Month with us by learning about two Black leaders in the transportation sector:

  • Lois Cooper was the first female African American transportation engineer in the Engineering Department at the Division of Highways, which is now called the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans). She was a part of several projects, such as the I-105 Century Freeway and the San Diego Freeway. She also became the first female director of the First Diamond Lane, which would lead to carpool lanes.
  • Garrett Augustus Morgan invented the three-position traffic signal, which improved the “stop” and “go” signals of that time by adding a third signal warning cars to slow down before a complete stop. His invention was the predecessor of the modern traffic light and improved traffic and pedestrian safety.

Feedback and resources for equitable access

RTD has been gathering community feedback about  of the Civil Rights Act, which promotes equitable access to transit services and ensures compliance with federal regulations. 

For more resources, the City of Boulder has provided a  for Boulder residents that are part of the city's immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities. City leadership is currently assessing the situation and carefully considering their response through local government and community partnerships.

Improve RTD Accessibility with your feedback

Stat of the month: Buffalo Bicycle Classic

CU’s annual  bike ride has raised over $4 million for high-merit/high-need scholarships for Colorado high school graduates since the ride was created in 2003.

2024 Year in Review: Accomplishments and Goals

Looking back, CU made great strides last year in improving transportation mobility and access. Learn more about the CU Boulder Climate Action Plan and . Additionally, we added late night service to Will Vill to augment existing options and secured $3.4 million to fund electric buses. RTD also extended the Zero Fare for Youth program indefinitely, allowing students under 19 to ride for free. This year, we will continue leveling up CU transportation with a transportation demand management plan from our Scope 3 team as well as more support for electric bus issues and carpooling, so stay tuned!

RTD January updates

RTD is bringing up new changes this year. Read our highlights below or get the detailed summary on the .

  • The AB2 line will add service on Canyon and 28th as opposed to Broadway.
  • The NB1 and NB2 lines to Nederland and Eldora will have minor time changes with better connections at Downtown Boulder Station.
  • The FF5 line to Anschutz will have new afternoon eastbound trips from Downtown Boulder Station to Anschutz Medical Center.

Since Jan. 1, 2025, the Hands-Free Law has been in effect. While driving, make sure to switch to hands-free accessories, such as car speaker systems, dashboard or phone mounts and apps such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Late night Buff Bus service now available for Will Vill route

Since November, Via buses have been operating on the Will Vill route from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m. every Thursday, Friday and Saturday when campus is open. These all-black buses will arrive at stops every 12–15 minutes, with the last bus leaving Will Vill at 1 a.m.

Did you know you can travel the I-70 mountain corridor completely car-free using the ? Part of the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Bustang family of transit services, Pegasus makes multiple trips per day on I-70 between Denver and Avon.  from the  to learn more.

  • Southbound movement on 55th Street is permanently closed; CO 119 travelers should continue south to Jay Road to travel back up north.
  • IBM Drive from Colorado Highway 119 to IBM E. Loop Road is also closed and will remain closed to all modes of transportation and travel until the end of 2025. Please follow detour signs to access the business park near IBM Drive.
  • North 71st Street, between Monarch Road and CO 119/Diagonal Highway, is closed, and will remain closed to all modes of transportation until May of 2025. Continue east on Monarch Road for access to southbound CO 119.

Be aware, construction on Diagonal Highway 119 has started

Since September 23, the has been under construction. The Niwot Park-n-Ride will be temporarily closed, and the north and southbound Colorado 119 bus stops at Colorado 52 will be permanently closed.

RTD’s Zero Fare for Youth Initiative extended permanently

Great news! In response to the which lets anyone 19 or younger ride RTD services for free, a student fee refund of $86.18 was automatically applied through the Bursar’s Office on Sept. 5 for all eligible students (born on or after Aug. 27, 2004).

To keep riding transit simple, all CU students will continue to tap their Buff OneCards on the bus or rail card validators. No need to submit a youth waiver request or carry additional forms of ID to prove that you are 19 or under. For more information, visit .

Use these resources to get around safely at night

CU Nightride offers free, student-operated ride services within Boulder city limits until 1 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and until midnight for all other days. Download the Guardian app to let your emergency contacts monitor your commute and call for help when needed. If you notice any suspicious behavior or criminal activity on campus, call 911 or call the CU Boulder Police Department non-emergency line at 303-492-6666 (answered 24/7).

BCycle is teaming up with Bicycle Transit Systems

BCycle, the bike share program with bikes across Boulder and the CU Boulder campus, is changing management but keeping the same program you love. Bicycle Transit Systems shares BCycle’s mission to change the world with bikes. Founded by bike share pioneer Alison Cohen, the 100% woman-owned, LGBTQ-owned, women-led company is an industry leader focused solely on bike sharing—done smartly.

Within the last month on the CU Boulder campus, BCycle has added 45 new docks and two new stations on Kittridge West and Stearns East. They also installed a 50 battery charging locker to swap and charge depleted batteries more efficiently, elevating your electric bike experience.

To wrap up National Hispanic Heritage Month, we want to highlight Nuria Fernandez's positive contributions to the transportation sector: became the first Afro-Latina to lead the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) in 2021. Her work across multiple agencies, such as the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority and Chicago Transit Authority, has improved transportation access and accessibility.

Under Fernandez’s leadership, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority completed the first Bay Area Rapid Transit heavy rail service and obtained federal approval for its and expansion in service.

Road revamp: New “bus only” lanes on Colorado Avenue

Since June, the outside vehicle lanes on Colorado Avenue have been converted to bus and right-turn lanes between Folsom Street and 30th Street. Keep an eye out for the signs and red street markings, and take a look at how this will change your commute.

Cycle for Scholarships: Join us for the Buffalo Bicycle Classic

Elevations Credit Union Buffalo Bicycle Classic is holding a bike ride on Sunday, Sept. 8, to celebrate its 22-year support of the College of Arts & Sciences BBC Scholarship Fund. There are nine routes to choose from. Find your favorite route and register for the event today! This year, the 10-mile “Little Buff” route has been refreshed and geared towards kids and families. This route features a commemorative T-shirt, cycling water bottle as well as snow cones, cycling snacks and balloon hats at the Dimmit Aid Station.

Until Sept. 1, CU faculty and staff members can use the code CUSTAFF for $20 off, and CU students can use the code CUSTUDENTS23 for $50 off registration. CU students, faculty and staff must use their colorado.edu email when registering to receive the discount. For teams of 10 or more riders, there is an additional $15 off per rider. The refund is given once the 10th person has registered for the team.

Improve your safety with the Guardian App

Rave Mobile Safety has now launched a new mobile safety application called , which features tools like a safety timer so friends or loved ones (called “guardians”) can monitor you if you’re walking alone and call for help if you don’t reach your destination at the expected time.

Keep an eye out for new “bus only” lanes on Colorado Avenue

Based on studies conducted between 2017 and 2019, the City of Boulder has decided to convert certain vehicle lanes on Colorado Avenue to Bus Only lanes. Join campus transportation research for a gift card!

Participants needed! The Burleson Global Design Group is researching the connection between student transportation and feelings of well-being. Participants should have been CU Boulder students within the last six months and have regularly attended in-person class, work or campus activities. Eligible students will participate in a one-time 30-minute interview with a member of the research team and will receive a $10 gift card.

New shuttles and accessibility programs for local hiking areas

Until Labor Day, the will provide service between Nederland High School and the Hessie Trailhead every 15 minutes on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. The will also provide service to Eldorado Canyon State Park on weekends and holidays until Labor Day, carrying passengers to Boulder, Superior and trailheads along Eldorado Springs Drive (Colorado Highway 170).

To wrap up LGBTQ+ Pride Month, here are two LGBTQ+ leaders who have made positive contributions to the transportation sector:

  • : Butler was a consultant, writer and speaker who and advocated for diversity and inclusion as well as urban transportation issues. Now, they are a doctoral student in Urban Planning at the Luskin School of Public Affairs at University of California, Los Angeles.
  • : Parker is a former mayor of Houston, Texas, and was involved in projects that improved mobility and infrastructure, such as the . Now, she is the president and CEO of the LGBTQ+ Victory Fund.

Disability Pride Month: Transportation leaders

July is Disability Pride Month! Celebrate with us by learning about two leaders with disabilities in the transportation sector:

  • : Yates is an accessibility consultant and journalist who has worked internationally to advocate for disability rights in transportation and infrastructure, including her role as an accessibility consultant for MetroRio in Rio de Janeiro. She has worked with BBC Three, and the Independent. 
  • : Rain is a disability advocate and content creator, to highlight different issues wheelchair users face in transportation and other sectors. She also gives talks on disability and LGBTQ+ education within the workplace.

New shuttle service to Chautauqua Park

Between March 1, 2023 and April 25, 2024, CU Boulder electric vehicles made 17,608 trips, moving more than 22,300 passengers.

Between August 1, 2023 and March 26, 2024, the Night Ride program reduced its gas consumption by about 1,748 gallons. This estimation was found using the miles driven and MPGE (miles per gal equivalent) for the 2023 Chevrolet Bolts. Since the Bolts began operating on March 23, they have driven a combined total of 58,463 miles, as of the end of April 2024.
